Stories of Friendship at the Gym

Doing any activity with a friend just seems like more fun. Fitness is no exception.

Good friends enrich our lives, and researchers conclude that friends can even improve our health. In August we celebrate Best Fitness Friends at acac, so we thought we would ask our personal trainers to share their stories of friendship at the gym. Our friend and personal trainer, Michael White, reminded us that friendship starts with family. Here’s what Michael had to say about the benefits of training with a friend, or in his case, his brother:

“When I first began my journey into the world of exercise, I had the help of a friend. The friend who helped me begin this journey was my older brother. We started to work out together when I was 14 and my brother was 16. Training together was vital to our success. Here are some of the key reasons having a workout buddy was important for my success:

Your friend (or family) and you will be better for it.”

After hearing Michael’s story of friendship with exercise, I came across two young friends exercising together. I thought I would put Michael’s insight to the test by asking these ladies, “Why do you workout with a friend?”

Immediately in their response it became clear, the same principles that Michael cited for success were relevant to Haley and Emilie’s progress with exercise.
