50 Years Young

Wow – I can’t believe it. I’m almost 50. FIFTY. 5-0. YEARS. OLD. I’m having so many mixed emotions about my upcoming birthday that I’m anxious. I’m not sure why. No other birthday has ever bothered me. As I tell my friends when they are feeling low about their age, “it’s just a number – it doesn’t define who you are, how active you are, or how you’re feeling.” Now I feel I need to practice what I preach. I never realized these feelings of being “almost 50” would be so strong and powerful in my mind. Ah, yes, in my mind. My body says “bring it 50” but my mind is saying “whoa – what the hell? Are you crazy? You’re not ready!”

Speaking of the mind, it is the most powerful resource in your body. If you shift your mindset, you can accomplish anything. If in your mind you think you can’t do something, guess what? You won’t do it. How does this apply to your health and fitness?

Exercise helps you to reach your personal best. It makes you feel good and look good. But, as you know, including physical activity in your life takes time and sacrifice. The excuses I hear most from people who want to exercise but don’t are, “I’m too busy,” or “I’m too tired to go to the gym,” or “I don’t have the time,” or “exercise is boring.” Sound familiar? Yes, it sounds like a negative mindset.

What if we shifted our mindset to a positive vibe about exercise and the gym? What would happen if you considered your gym time as an important appointment? Schedule it on your calendar. You’re likely to show up to an appointment, right? Did you know that exercise increases your energy? “Researchers at the University of Georgia found that sedentary, otherwise healthy adults who engaged in as little as 20 minutes of low-to-moderate aerobic exercise, three days a week for six consecutive weeks, reported feeling less fatigued and more energized.” Read about it here. What about hiring a personal trainer at the gym for the first few sessions to help you get acclimated, ease some of your fears, and to make exercise fun? You are important. Only you can make changes to your mind. I love this quote from this article, “We should invest in our health and wellness every day in order to live our lives to the fullest and strive to reach our potential.” I mean, right? We have one life and we are given so many chances to make it be the best we want it to be. We have the power and the control. Let’s do this.

I hope some of this insight will help shift your mindset about exercise (and for me, aging!). I know that blogging this, actually putting it to writing, has helped me work through some of my fears. Why am I so upset at having my 50th birthday? I mean, I’m alive, I’m healthy, I have a wonderful, talented family, really great friends, the best clients, the best class members, the best team members, and I have a career I absolutely love. I’m a pretty lucky woman.

Did you know that by 2017, one out of every two adults in the United States will be 50 or older? (Nielsen 2012a). And this does not scare me anymore, as I know I’m not alone. I’m going to embrace the big 5-0 and kick it’s ass. Bring it 50!
