Do you know my story?

Hi friends. I’ve been hanging with acac since 1999. And, by hanging, I mean teaching classes, taking classes, and then in 2010 personal training on the fitness floor. I love this place. So caring, giving, rewarding, and especially, open to new and exciting ideas. One crazy (and hopefully, exciting) idea is having me write a blog. What should I write about? Why me? Who is Teresa Harris? Let me tell you my story.

In 2008, I came strolling into acac ready to teach a class. On my way to the classroom, two (yes, 2!) people asked me “when are you due?” Wait. What? Due? Seriously? Well, that set off many alarms in my head. What are these people seeing that I’m clearly not? After a good, long cry and a look in the mirror, I decided I needed a change in my life. Yes, I was a group exercise instructor but I still thought I could eat anything I wanted and not worry about my health. It proved to be very dead wrong.   I pulled myself together and went on a health spree within my mind and body. I began to really watch what I ate by logging everything in a food journal. I started to exercise more regularly for myself by increasing my cardio and weight training out on the floor (which I found out I LOVED, hence my becoming a personal trainer!), in addition to teaching classes. I increased my water intake. I made sure I was getting my daily-recommended allowances of the macronutrients protein, carbohydrates, and healthy fats.   All of these changes allowed me to drop unwanted fat and pounds and keep it off. I’ve never felt better in my life and I’ll be 50 in August!

So, what’s the moral of this story? I’ve been there. I know what it’s like to be unhappy with your body.  And I know how hard the struggle is to lose weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle.  But I also know that with persistence, creating a lifestyle change works.  It’s possible to change your eating and exercising habits – you just have to want it and want it bad enough to make that change.
