Make Your New Year's Resolutions SMART
New Year’s resolutions are an age-old adage.
New year, new you as the saying goes. Typically, we want to improve something in our lives (lose weight, spend more time with friends & family, eat healthier etc.), but get stuck on a very basic question: How do I achieve my goal? That might be why experts say that only 8% of people meet the resolutions they set around New Year’s.
Want to have a better chance of achieving your resolutions in 2018? Make them SMART:
S – Specific
Answer: Who, What, When, Where, and Why
- What do I want to accomplish?
- Why is this goal important?
- Who is involved?
- Where is it located?
- Which resources or limits are involved?
M – Measureable
How will you know when you reach your goal? Make sure you define what you want to accomplish very clearly.
A – Attainable
Take stock of your current state and base your goals around that. Make sure your resolution and resolution timeline are realistic.
R – Relevant
What’s going on in your life? How do all areas in your life look (work, home, friends, school, community, misc. obligations etc.)? Ask yourself if this is the right time for your chosen resolution. Pushing yourself too hard too fast in any area can lead to frustration and abandonment of your goal.
T – Time-bound
When do you want to accomplish your goal by? Give yourself a final deadline (or a series of mini-deadlines) and stick to it.
