Some thoughts on Moderation and Body Diversity

These are two things that I’ve been thinking a lot about recently, and I decided I would share some other amazing perspectives on them both instead of trying to write my own post to top what has already been said so beautifully:

The idea of “moderation” might seem great on the surface, but it's become a sneaky way for diet culture and patriarchy to tell us to shrink ourselves: “It's OK to eat a little bit, but not ‘too much.’” “It’s OK to listen to your cravings, but only if they’re the ‘right’ cravings.” "It’s OK to take up some space with your body, but only up to a certain point.” “It’s OK to speak up, but also keep your voice down.” “It’s OK to think outside the box, but don’t make anyone uncomfortable.” – The truth is that it’s OK to do all of these things *as much as you want and need*—no restrictions, no buts. And “as much as you want and need” might feel like a lot, especially when you’ve been restricted and hemmed in by our culture’s rules. OF COURSE you’re not going to instantly settle at some “moderate” middle ground where you “only” eat when you’re hungry and stop at some “perfect” level of fullness. OF COURSE for a while you’re going to go to town on all the foods that were previously “off-limits.” – So don't get caught up in these sneaky forms of food and body policing that tell you everything has to be done in moderation. Take up space. Get loud. Break the rules. ???? We are sold the idea that our bodies are all meant to look a certain way – thanks, diet-culture. . ????This idea fuels fat phobia and discrimination based on body size…and yet it is completely unfounded by scientific evidence. . ????After examining the fossils of our early human ancestors, archaeological researchers found that body diversity, specifically larger body size, is *not* a new phenomena. . ????From a biological or evolutionary framework, larger body size is attributed to things like brain evolution, locomotor development, species adaptation, greater access to food sources, and civilisation. . ????These two studies also found that the development of larger bodies was born out of East Africa as much as 1.7 million years ago to adapt to things like living at a higher altitude and travelling longer distances by foot (Will, Pablos & Stock 2015; 2017). . ???? And, yet another study found that our current average body mass is actually *smaller* than it was 50,000 years ago – probs due to technological advancements. (Ruff, 2002) . ???? So…the moral of this story is that we are biologically and genetically predisposed to having different body shapes and sizes. AND Western culture with its “toxic refined” food is not “responsible” for the “epidemic” of larger body sizes – despite the medicalised BS that diet-culture tells us. . ????Body diversity is NOT a problem. In fact, it’s a contributing factor to our survival and our genetic evolution over the past millions of years or so. In other words, without it we would be extinct. . ????So let’s STOP trying to mould our bodies in to the ideal-du-jour and STOP oppressing bodies that diverge from that ideal. . ????And while we are at it, let’s STOP medicalising body fat and start looking at it from a different framework — because I’m sure it will have a different (and less fear-mongering) story to tell if we approach it from a biological or socio-cultural frame. . #biologyisfun #healthateverysize #HAES #losehatenotweight #supportnotstigma #evidencebased #disorderedeating #edrecovery #bodyimage #bodydiversity #bodyrespect #bopo #intuitiveeating #donewithdieting #wednesdaywisdom #eatingdisorderrecovery
