Gardening Safety Tips
Spring is in the air!
Dress to protect.
Wear long sleeves, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to lower your risk for sunburn and skin cancer. Use insect repellant containing DEET to protect yourself from diseases caused by mosquitoes and ticks. Wear gloves, safety goggles, long pants, sturdy shoes, and earmuffs to protect your body while using machinery.
Put safety first.
Make sure your equipment is working properly; carefully sharpen your tools; keep harmful chemicals, tools, and equipment out of children’s reach; follow instructions and warning labels on chemicals and equipment.
Know your limits in the heat.
Monitor your activities and time in the sun to lower your risk for heat-related illness. Drink more liquids and avoid drinking alcohol or sugary beverages in the heat. Take breaks often and rest in the shade.
