Fall Spice Refresher
Fall is in the air and my thoughts are turning to my favorite “sweet” spices – cinnamon, clove, allspice, ginger, and pumpkin pie spice. It may seem like spices never go bad, but they actually can! Here are some tips to keep your collection up to snuff:
- Ground spices degrade after about 6 months, so check yours if they’ve been in your cabinet since last fall.
- Apply the smell test: If you don’t detect intense fragrance when you open the jar, it’s time to replace.
- Buy small amounts so they don’t grow bland before you’ve used them up.
- Whole spices such as allspice berries and cinnamon sticks stay fresh twice as long if stored properly – in airtight vessels away from light and heat.
