What is Pilates?

The Pilates method is a physical fitness program developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates. Pilates is a complete system of exercises designed to build strength and muscle tone, enhance balance and mobility, and bring the body into proper alignment. Pilates focuses on five principles: breath, pelvic placement, rib cage placement, scapular movement and stabilization, and head and cervical placement. Pilates uses a wide range of precise exercises that enhance the mind-body connection.

Mat Pilates

Mat Pilates uses body weight and props to strengthen the core and balance the body. Learn to control your muscles in a flowing series of exercises while focusing on the five principles of Pilates. These classes are offered for free! See the group exercise schedule for details.

Reformer Pilates

The Reformer is a piece of equipment that utilizes a cushioned mat, or carriage, with weighted cables to provide resistance. The Reformer offers a variety of exercises that focus on strengthening and stretching the muscles, joint mobility, and core control. The Pilates Reformer complements Mat Pilates classes by incorporating the basic principles and exercises in the workout, but challenges students with the extra resistance.

Space is limited in all Reformer classes. In order to take the Reformer Pilates classes offered at acac, you must first be approved by an instructor. You can work with instructors by taking the Group Reformer Principles classes that are offered on Fridays at 11:00am at Albemarle Square or Thursdays at 5:00pm at Downtown. There is a $5 fee and required sign-up for Pilates Reformer classes. Pilates participants must notify acac two hours in advance if cancellation is needed. Failure to cancel the required two hours in advance will result in a $25 fee.

Pilates Reformer Small Group and Private Trainings

This is for more personalized training and is helpful for beginners wishing to join the Reformer group classes. Small or private trainings will help you get more familiar with the five basic principles, Reformer equipment, and tailor the training to your body’s needs.
